Iris Tenge, born in Baden-Baden, began dancing, acting and performing in theater, radio and TV productions while at school. She completed her professional training at Stuttgart Ballet's John-Cranko-Academy, and subsequently danced a wide range of classical and contemporary works in numerous companies, notably Hamburg Ballet under the direction of John Neumeier – where she also began to choreograph –, and William Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt, as well as guesting internationally.
Subsequently free-lancing as choreographer and ballet master, she has worked a.o. with Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wuppertal, Aterballetto, Ballet du Rhin, Opera Frankfurt, Théatre Royal de La Monnaie Bruxelles, Balletto Teatro di Torino, and Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company.
"It is a great joy for me to return to Hamburg, and to work with the Bundesjugendballett!", she says. "At the time I decided after 6 years to leave John Neumeier’s company, it was not at all an easy choice. The reason was to go further with my choreographic work. Now I find here again the artistic atmosphere, qualities and values which have left an enduring mark in my life – and yet it’s a completely new situation, and adventurousness, with these marvellous young dancers – it’s truly a gift."
